School changes, big and small

After the first two months of school, many changes have been spotted around the building that were not a part of the school last year.

Many subtle changes may have gone unnoticed, like the litter-denouncing stickers on garbage cans, school flags hanging over the sidewalk in front of the parking lot and additions to the school lunch menu. However, students may have noticed the "Pride of the Pack" hats popping up on students' heads, the marching band disrupting the end of class on game days, and mobs of seniors attending events for spirit points.

Administration and the faculty deserve recognition for the changes that make a significantly positive impact on the high school atmosphere. These changes to the school, big and small, have helped to improve the school spirit and camaraderie at Timpanogos. Many students have noticed these changes and appreciate the way Mr. Murphy is running the school in comparison to past years.

Mic Lopp, a senior who plays the clarinet for the marching band, appreciates the opportunity to march down the halls at the end of school on game days. "I really like how Mr. Murphy recognizes the band program at our school and how we are able to show school spirit by playing through the halls during home games."

Once a week, the school recognizes the "Pride of the Pack." Every Thursday morning before school, a couple students or groups of students are acknowledged for their excellent representation of the school. Nominated students receive a Timpanogos hat and a spotlight in the school newspaper, as well as compliments from their administration and peers. The students are not only selected for athletic achievements but also academic and service contributions as well.

"I've noticed that Murphy actually connects with students. He's more of a friend than an administrator, and he connects with everyone, not just a select group of kids." says senior Trevor Harmon.

Another new addition to our school are the designated weekly spirit activities. To encourage participation in school activities throughout the entire year, spirit points are now awarded to the class with the most students that attend. The choir concert and a girls' tennis match are just two of the activities that have been selected so far.

Trent Jackman likes the fact that these spirit activities encourage him to go to an assortment of school events that he might not otherwise choose to attend. "I think that choosing the specific events will show people how much fun it is to attend a variety of different activities."

These additions to our school, small as they may be, are leading to a renewed sense of school spirit at Timpanogos. Ready or not, it's up to the students to determine the pride of the pack.
